Bio Fuel

As well as premium boutique wines, our property at Longwood also breeds commercial Angus cattle, and grows cereal crops.
As part of our cereal crop rotation plan, we grow Indian Mustard as a brake crop. The oil is extracted from the seed, filtered to1micron, and used as carbon neutral renewable Biofuel. The Biofuel is then used to power our Case Diesel tractor and VW Diesel Caddy van.
The residue (which contains Nitrogen, Phosphors, Potassium, Suphur) is spread on our pasture as a fertiliser. This residue can also be used as stock feed (it contains 30% protein) and is basis for Biogas production.
Many European farmers have been using this concept since Rudolf Diesel invented the compression engine in 1897. His objective was to develop an engine that would run on a variety of vegetable oil. However as fossil oil and fertiliser are more readily available, they are used predominantly for agriculture in Australia today.
Major European machinery manufacturers eg Deutz-Fahr, Fendt and John Deere manufacture Biofuel powered machinery. Kits are also available to convert Diesel engines to run on Biofuels.
With the world using 83 million barrel’s of fossil oil per day and its availabllity diminishing, our mission is to promote the use of Biofuels in rural Australia.
